Triathlon Made Simple(ish)
This simple triangle from the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine explains how to improve performance in sport. Sufficient (correct) training stimulus (or load) coupled with sufficient (correct) recovery and (correct) nutrition leads to optimal gains. Pretty easy?
The devil, as ‘they’ say, in in the detail. The optimal levels of the vertices of the triangle will be different for, and change over time for, everyone. At an absolute minimum we need to recognise the value of each of these vertices.
Most triathletes address the apex of the triangle (not always well) with little to no consideration for the other two points. It makes sense to have training load at the apex of the triangle as without training there is no improvement. However, without recovery adaptation is hampered and improvement will plateau. Without correct nutrition training quality and recovery is compromised. So coming back to the simple point-all three points of the triangle need to be addressed to optimise your training outcomes.
In short if you train smart, rest well and eat healthily you will continue to improve and enjoy your triathlon journey.
Happy training,
Peter
