LONG CHAIN MUSCLE (OR POSTERIOR OBLIQUE SLING) ACTIVATION IN SWIMMING

The posterior oblique sling is a chain of muscles that connect the shoulder with the opposite hip.

When we engage this sling it helps to stabilise the pelvis and spine which keeps the swimmer in a more streamline position. This engagement also creates a much stronger grip on the water as larger and more muscle groups and being utilised rather than the less powerful peripheral ones.
The sling is activated in swimming when the beginning of the down beat of the kick on one side coincides with the beginning of the catch on the opposite side of the body. This is why kicking in swimming is so important but I will cover that in greater detail another day.
Alternate simultaneous arm and leg raises in the plank position or on the stomach are excellent for strengthening the sling. If done lightly before a swim this activity will activate the long chain of muscles leading to a better session.

Happy Training,
Peter
